Backstory

Origins

Not much is known about Malevola's past. She was born in Australia and claims to be 33 years old, though she may be much older than she appears. During a party in Episode 6, she mentions that the criminal family known as the Yachties have been trying to "finger her for three generations"—suggesting she could be decades or even centuries old. At some point, she emigrated to California.

Criminal Career

Due to her half-demonic nature, Malevola turned to crime to survive. Her rap sheet includes assault, burglary, extortion, forgery, kidnapping, and second-degree murder. She has been around long enough that the Yachties, a criminal family controlling parts of Torrance port and smuggling illegal goods, have held a grudge against her for three generations. Given that history, she may have had encounters with Mecha Man Prime and Mecha Man Astral during her villain career, though this remains unconfirmed.

Joining the Phoenix Program

Malevola joined the SDN's Phoenix Program to reform and use her powers for good as part of the Z-Team.

Appearance

Malevola presents as a tall, muscular woman with red skin, pupil-less yellow eyes, a demon tail, and two large demon horns protruding from the sides of her head. She wears a white leotard with denim shorts and black high heels, carrying a large broadsword on her back.

Personality

Malevola is a confident, powerful presence who uses her intimidating appearance to her advantage while showing genuine care for her teammates. Key personality traits: - Protective: Serves as Sonar's NA sponsor and fiercely defends her friends - Direct: Doesn't hesitate to throw a mug at Robert Robertson when dissatisfied with his answer about his identity - Morally complex: Despite her demonic nature, she's an atheist—which raises interesting philosophical questions

- Enhanced Physical Abilities: Stronger, faster, and tougher than baseline humans - Night Vision: Able to see in the dark - Prehensile Tail: Can pick up objects or people with her tail

Magic

- Portal Creation: Able to create portals for quick teleportation - Wound Transferal: Can heal teammates by absorbing their injuries—which she enjoys doing (possible masochistic tendencies) - Demonic Language: Speaks a demon tongue; her sword's name is in "demon garble"

Gains +1 Charisma or Vigor (stacks). - Life Trade Visions: After healing a hero, also reveals stats of the next call she's assigned to. - Portal Ritual: After healing a hero, creates a portal near the call (once per shift). Portal lasts 45 seconds after call completion.

Relationships

Sonar

His Narcotics Anonymous sponsor and close friend with synergy. If Sonar is cut from the team, Malevola refuses many dispatches the next day and clocks out early in rebellion. She's first to speak against his arrest and becomes very happy with Robert if he steps in to cover for Sonar.

Phenomaman

Has synergy with him if Sonar is cut. When sent on calls together, Phenomaman says he finds her "genuinely terrifying," which she takes as a compliment.

Waterboy

Has synergy with him if Sonar is cut. Waterboy tries to be respectful by calling her "ma'am," but she doesn't enjoy that.

Prism

Close enough that Prism calls her "Mal."

Trivia

  • Her name is the feminine form of "malévolo," which translates to "malicious" or "malevolent" in Spanish and Portuguese.
  • One of few dispatchable members who goes by her given name rather than an alias.
  • "Malevola" is also the Brazilian Portuguese name for Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty.
  • Could be an homage to Illyana Rasputina (Magik) from Marvel's X-Men—specifically her alter ego Darkchyld. Both are demons who wield swords and create portals.
  • May also be a nod to Hellboy, being a demon turned superhero with a similar design.
  • Her last name Gibb is a tribute to voice actress Alanah Pearce's late stepfather.
  • To give an otherworldly vibe, her natural voice has an added delay effect—one of only two characters with a voice filter not requiring an additional device (the other is Toxic in his superpower form).
