Backstory

Origins

Back when he was a superhero, Track Star was the youngest member of the Brave Brigades and worked alongside Robert "Robbie" Robertson II, the second Mecha Man known as Astral. Despite being the junior member, Chase became close friends with Robbie. His youth meant he often got stuck babysitting a young Robert Robertson, though he eventually grew fond of the boy and formed a strong bond with him.

1999

In 1999, Chase attended a barbecue at Robbie's home in San Pedro, California. He discussed getting an augment installed by Elliot, having sucked up to the man for weeks to be first in line. During the party, young Robert triggered the Mecha Man armor's defensive protocols in the shed. Chase used his powers to smash down the door and pull Robert out of the way of the armor's laser gatling gun—though not before a chunk of Robert's ear was taken off. Chase may have dislocated Robert's arm in the process of saving him.

2008

Chase intervened in a violent fight between Astral and Elliot after the latter grew resentful over Astral canceling the vote to make him an official member of the Brave Brigade for the fifth time. Astral had beaten Elliot unconscious and was about to deliver another blow when Chase pulled him away. When Astral tried to justify his actions, Chase refused to play along: "I didn't do shit. You did that yourself." Moments later, Elliot—wearing a bloody towel as a shroud—fired Astral's own gun at him. Chase tried to use his powers to push Astral out of the way, but the short distance was too much to beat. Astral was hit in the chest and died in Chase's arms as he screamed for help.

Post Astral's Death

After Robbie's death, Track Star reached out to Robert, but Robert cut off ties—likely struggling to process his father's death. In the years that followed, Chase discovered too late the grave cost of his powers: while he could move 50 times faster than the average person, it also aged him 50 times faster each time he used his ability. Fifteen years after his friend's death, Chase now works as a dispatcher at SDN. Due to his power's side effect, he appears as an elderly man despite being only 39 years old. Four months after Robert's fight with Shroud left him in a coma, Chase recommended to Blonde Blazer that they recruit Robert to SDN in exchange for fixing the Mecha Man suit.

Appearance

An elderly-looking man trapped in a 39-year-old's body. White hair (formerly dark brown), dark brown eyes, and the weathered appearance of someone decades older than his actual age.

Personality

Outwardly, Chase might look and act like a grumpy old man, but he's actually a young man trapped in an old body. This has left him bitter, leading him to believe there's no such thing as karma. Key personality traits: - Bitter and cynical about his fate - Uses humor to suppress trauma ("We joke. We laugh. We suppress our trauma.") - Absolutely adores dogs - Protective of those he cares about

Powers and Abilities

Powers

- Superhuman Speed: Chase can move 50 times faster than a normal human.

With Blonde Blazer's Amulet (Star Blazer)

To confuse Shroud, Blonde Blazer gives Chase her amulet—since Shroud didn't predict her powers came from it. As Star Blazer, Chase can combine his own power with the amulet's: - Superhuman Strength: Can take out components of Shroud's mecha suit with his bare hands while flying at superhuman speed - Superhuman Durability: Retains enough energy after defeating Shroud's mecha suit to continue fighting - Flight: Can combine flight with superhuman speed to pierce enemies; can direct Flambae's flames by whirling around them - Energy Projection: Likely adopts this power from the amulet - Regenerative Healing Factor: Can move freely without falling into a coma; serves as a temporary solution to his aging curse - Superhuman Metabolism: Likely adopts this from the amulet

Weaknesses

- Accelerated Aging: While using his powers, Chase ages 50 times faster than a normal human. Blonde Blazer's amulet appears to negate this.

Relationships

Robert "Robbie" Robertson II

Late coworker and close friend. Despite differences—Chase wanted to let Elliot join the Brave Brigade while Robbie opposed it—Chase was loyal to the end. He tried to save Robbie when Elliot shot him and swore revenge.

Beef

Possibly the living being Chase loves the most. When first offered to dog-sit as a favor, Chase happily accepted before Robert even explained his reasoning. He added dog treats, balls, and a dog bed to his desk. After Shroud threatens the Z-Team using Beef as collateral, Chase's stance on killing Shroud may shift—if Shroud dies, Chase expresses to local news that he got what he deserved.

Phoenix Program|Z-Team

While their deeds are undeniably beneficial, Chase keeps inklings of doubt about their motives, often recommending Robert cut them all. But after the final fight, Chase lauds them to local news as the real heroes who fought against Shroud and the Red Ring.

Trivia

  • Chase appears to be based on DC's Flash, with additional similarities to A-Train from The Boys.
  • Young Chase is voiced by Elijah Wright, the son of Jeffrey Wright (Chase's main voice actor). Keeping it in the family.
  • AdHob released a shirt featuring Chase sticking his tongue out—referencing both Robert's "Afro Einstein" nickname and the famous Einstein photo.
  • Born around 1983, making him 39 despite looking like he's pushing 80. Speedster powers: not even once.
  • His reluctant bond with Beef shows that even the grumpiest characters can be won over by a good dog.
